The Journey to 1000 Acres
US $20,000 awarded
Grant Period: 1 year
The Journey to 1000 Acres Regenerative Agriculture Project, led by Red Diamond Compost, offers an innovative approach to agricultural education, aiming to equip farmers with sustainable techniques that prioritise soil health, biodiversity, and nutrient management. This programme is dedicated to addressing critical agricultural challenges in Barbados, where soils are often stripped of nutrients and biodiversity due to large-scale, synthetic farming practices. The project’s goal is to empower both new and experienced farmers with the knowledge and skills to adopt regenerative, organic farming methods that improve soil quality, yield more nutrient-dense foods, and support a healthier, more resilient ecosystem.

In Barbados, nutrient-poor soils contribute to the production of nutrient-deficient crops, which in turn impact community health. This deficiency in essential nutrients is linked to the rise of chronic illnesses, particularly among the youth. Additionally, the extensive use of synthetic agrochemicals harms marine ecosystems and exacerbates climate-related issues. This project aims to break the cycle, providing a sustainable path forward by teaching regenerative practices that restore soil vitality, improve food quality, and protect our environment.
Project Goals:
- Promote healthy soil to mitigate erosion and flooding,
- Increase the production of nutrient-rich foods for local communities
- Educate farmers on biodiversity’s importance and the harmful impact of synthetic inputs on marine life
- Train farmers in regenerative organic agricultural practices that contribute to long-term soil and crop health.
