The Journey to 1,000 Acres — One Farmer at a Time

The Journey to 1,000 Acres initiative has launched in Barbados with the aim to restore soil health and strengthen the island’s food system. BECT stood proudly alongside Grantee, Red Diamond Compost, for this ambitious new initiative set to transform agriculture across the island.

The launch event gathered stakeholders in the agricultural sector, innovators and numerous community partners to celebrate a project that directly confronts the urgent challenges facing Barbados’ agricultural sector. Decades of conventional farming practices have left soils depleted, water resources vulnerable, and local diets increasingly dependent on imported or nutrient-deficient foods. This initiative aims to reverse that trend. Regenerative agriculture is an approach that looks beyond yield—it nurtures the land, protects water sources, and produces nutrient-dense crops locally that support healthier communities.

The project will train 70 farmers in regenerative organic agriculture techniques, focusing on soil health restoration, sustainable nutrient management, and producing higher-quality, nutrient-dense crops. These practices are not only essential to revitalising the land but also to improving national food security and health.

During the event, BECT was invited to share a few words, underscoring the importance of the collaboration with Red Diamond Compost in such a transformative initiative.

“BECT is committed to making an investment, not just in our soil health, but in our children and our future.” said Executive Director, Ché Greenidge.

Red Diamond Compost, the lead implementer of the initiative, expressed the vision behind the initiative and the prospective outcomes for the local agricultural sector.

“Our goal at Red Diamond [Compost] is to see successful farmers,” said Founder, Joshua Forte. “We are on a mission to transform 1,000 acres in Barbados into regenerative, organic production so people can have clean, nutrient-rich food and be sustainable.”

One of the most compelling goals of the project is its cumulative impact. With every farmer who signs up, we get one step closer to regenerating 1,000 acres of healthier soil across Barbados. Individuals interested in participating in the programme can register here

As the project moves into its implementation phase, BECT remains committed to supporting its growth and success. By investing in the health of our soils today, we are planting the seeds for a more resilient tomorrow. Join us on this journey!
